Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that help remove waste and toxins from the body. A Lymphatic drainage massage is a technique used to relieve swelling (edema) that can occur from medical treatment such as surgery, illness that blocks the lymphatic system, consumption of certain foods, pregnancy, and more.

Lymphatic drainage or manual lymphatic drainage, has been used for centuries for therapeutic purposes and reducing swelling in the body. The specific technique of Manual Lymph drainage (MLD), was introduced and developed by the Vodders (Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid) in 1936 in Paris for treatment of swollen lymph nodes.

MLD is a light, skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of fluid out of the swollen area. This technique is specifically focused on the lymph vessels/nodes to help the flow of fluid. Light pressure is applied to the unaffected areas of the body first, making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area. MLD can be a beneficial treatment for anyone experiencing swelling, bloating, or fluid retention. (Resources)
